Step 1: Choose and Register a Custom Domain
To get started, first, you'll need to choose your custom domain. You have several domain register companies to pick from so select one that you find easy to use. Register your chosen domain by following the instructions provided by your chosen domain provider. This usually involves searching for your desired domain name, adding it to your cart, and completing the purchase process.
Step 2: Go to Project Dashboard on WeWeb
Next, you'll need to connect this domain to your WeWeb project. To do this, first, sign in to your WeWeb account. Navigate to the dashboard and select the desired project you want to link with your custom domain. Now, click on the project to open the project menu.
Step 3: Access Project Settings
Look for 'Project Settings' on the project menu and click on it. It generally appears in the left-side menu bar of the project interface. Within 'Project Settings', find and click on the 'Domain' tab.
Step 4: Enter Your Domain
Under the 'Custom Domain' section of the 'Domain' tab, you should see a field to enter your domain. Type in your newly acquired custom domain here. Make sure to omit the 'www' prefix when you enter your domain name. For instance, if your website is 'www.example.com', just type in 'example.com'.
Step 5: Save Changes
Once you have entered your domain, click on the 'Apply' or 'Save Changes' button. This step is crucial so make sure you don't skip it. It saves your domain settings and initiates the process of linking the domain to your WeWeb project.
Step 6: Copy DNS Records
After saving the changes, WeWeb will provide you DNS records. This may include A records and CNAME records that you will need to paste into your domain host. Make sure to copy these records as you'll need them in the next step.
Step 7: Update DNS Records on Domain Registrar
Now, head back to your domain registrar. Navigate to the domain settings or DNS management page. Once there, look for the field to input the A and CNAME records. Our goal is to replace the existing DNS records with the ones provided by WeWeb.
First, add the A record values provided by WeWeb. There might be more than one, so ensure you paste all of them one by one. Next, paste the CNAME record value. This should be a subdomain like 'www', pointing to your WeWeb project URL.
Step 8: Save Changes
Once you have entered all of the records that WeWeb provided, complete this step by saving your changes on your domain registrar end.
Step 9: Wait for DNS Propagation
Here comes the waiting part. The changes you made might take some time to propagate across the internet. This can take anywhere from a few hours to 48 hours, so be patient.
Step 10: Verify Domain Connection
After the DNS propagation time has passed, go back to your Project Settings under WeWeb. Under the 'Domain' tab, your domain should now show as connected. If not, allow some more time for DNS propagation, and try refreshing the page again.
Congratulations! Your custom domain is now connected to your WeWeb project. Navigate to the new URL, and see your project live on the internet.
