Provision Watson Services on IBM Cloud

Pro tip: Choose a single IBM Cloud region for all your Watson services to minimize latency. The Dallas region (us-south) is the most mature and has all services available. Frankfurt (eu-de) is required for EU GDPR-sensitive workloads.

Deploy and Configure for Production

Watson service integrations work fully in Bolt's WebContainer during development — all API calls are outbound HTTPS. Before deploying to production, there are two important Watson-specific considerations: service plan limits and IAM token management at scale. Free Lite tier limits are per-calendar-month. Watson NLU: 30,000 API calls/month. Watson Assistant: 10,000 API calls/month, 1,000 unique monthly active users. Watson Text to Speech: 10,000 characters/month. If your app exceeds these limits, requests return 429 errors. Upgrade to the Plus or Standard plans through IBM Cloud — pricing is per API call with tiered volume discounts. For production deployment, deploy your Bolt project to Netlify via Settings → Applications → Netlify. Troubleshooting

Error: 'IamAuthenticator: apikey is required' or 'serviceUrl is required'

Cause: Watson environment variables are not set or are misspelled. Each Watson service requires its own API key and URL — WATSON_NLU_API_KEY is different from WATSON_ASSISTANT_API_KEY.

Solution: Check all Watson environment variables in your .env file. IBM Cloud credentials show the exact variable names you need in the 'Show credentials' section. Verify that WATSON_NLU_SERVICE_URL is a full URL starting with https:// — some IBM Cloud UI screens show it without the protocol. Restart the Bolt dev server after editing .env.

API returns 429 Too Many Requests

Cause: You have exceeded the Watson service's free Lite tier monthly limit. Watson Lite limits: NLU 30,000 calls/month, Assistant 10,000 calls/month, TTS 10,000 characters/month.

Solution: Check your usage in IBM Cloud → your service → Manage → Usage. If you need more capacity, upgrade to the Plus or Standard plan. For development, implement rate limiting in your API routes to avoid burning through the monthly limit during testing. Alternatively, provision a second Lite service instance using a different IBM Cloud account for testing versus production.

Watson Assistant returns 404 'Session not found'

Text-to-speech synthesize() returns a Buffer but audio doesn't play in browser

Cause: Watson TTS returns audio data as a Node.js Buffer or ReadableStream. To play it in the browser, you need to convert it to a Blob URL or stream it correctly from your API route.

Solution: Return the audio from your API route with the correct Content-Type header (audio/mp3 or audio/ogg;codecs=opus).
